Whelan and Threlfall join Quakers

Steve Staunton has signed veteran forward Noel Whelan and Liverpool youngster Robbie Threlfall as he tries to guide Darlo away from the bottom of League 2. Whelan has had a long distinguished career which has seen play for Leeds United, Middlesbrough and Coventry City.

Whelan has also spent a little time in Scotland playing for Aberdeen, Dunfermline and Livingstone north of the border. Whelan who is 35 next month has been plying his trade for Harrogate Town recently however it is hoped that the striker can turn back the years now that he has another chance to play in the Football League for Darlo.

The 6 foot 2 front man will bring some experience to a Darlington front line who have struggling to find the target so far this season. Whelan has never been a prolific scorer as his record of around 60 career goals shows however Staunton must believe that the former England under 21 international can add something to his struggling side. Noel has been brought in on a non contract basis so if the move isn`t working out for both parties the Yorkshireman can leave the Arena with immediate effect.

Left back Robbie Threlfall has joined Darlo on loan from Premiership giants Liverpool as Quakers attempt to climb away from the foot of the table. Threlfall has some experience of life in the lower leagues as he has had 4 loan spells away from Anfield in the last couple of years.

It is likely that Threlfall will go straight into the Quakers starting line up this weekend as Darlington have had problems filling the left back position so far this season. Threlfall has been capped by England at under 19 level and the young Liverpudlian will be keen to demonstrate that he is ready to play senior football at this stage of his career.
