It has been reported that four members of the Quakers squad have been told they are no longer needed at the Northern Echo Arena. Steve Staunton hasn`t named any of the 4 players publicly however it is thought that Matty Plummer, Paul Arnsion, Mark Convery, Jeff Smith, Rikki Bains, James Bennett and David Knight could all be amongst those surplus to requirements.
It is likely that the make up of the squad for tomorrows game away at Chesterfield will give a few clues as to which of Darlo`s players have been told they are free to find a new club. Steve Staunton`s decision to only name 6 substitutes for the home game against Burton Albion last weekend demonstrated that the Quakers management team will not field players who are not giving their all to the club.
There is no doubt that there will be a lot of speculation as to which members of Darlington`s squad have no future at the club however I feel Knight, Arnsion, Bennett and Bains could be the four players who are set to depart the Arena. All of these players played regularly under Colin Todd`s regime at the club earlier this term however since Steve Staunton and Kevin Richardson arrived all 4 have been in and out of the side. Now that Quakers have been able to bring a few more bodies into the Arena Darlington`s management team must feel that they have enough depth in their squad to allow these 4 players to leave the north east, if any offers come in for them on either a temporary or long term basis.
Staunton has been keen to give the sides youngsters first team opportunities since he arrived in Darlington and given the solid displays that both Corey Barnes and Curtis Main have put in the club must be confident that the young players at the Arena can continue to play a crucial part in the Quakers survival bid. Six home grown youngsters were named in last weekends squad which illustrates that any youth team player of potential will be given a chance to shine in senior football at Darlington.
